What is ISO 14001?

Environmental management standard developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).

This is an international standard for private and public sector organisations to promote continuous improvement in environmental performance and help organisations minimise how their operations negatively affect the environment.

ISO 14001 is the international specification for an environmental management system (EMS). It specifies requirements for establishing an environmental policy, meeting environmental legislation requirements, determining environmental aspects and impacts of products/activities/services, planning environmental objectives and measurable targets, implementation and operation of programmes to meet objectives and targets, checking and corrective action, and management review.

Why did we adopt this standard?
GI Solutions wanted to establish a method for monitoring our impact on our environment. ISO 14001 provides several benefits to businesses, including improvements in Environmental Performance, waste reduction and increased efficiency.

What does it mean to you?
Clients look for evidence of good environmental management throughout their supply chain. ISO 14001 helps print suppliers meet the expectations of their clients. It guarantees a high standard of environmental practice and continual commitment to environmental improvement.

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)

GI Solutions achieved certification in May 2008. Certification means we can identify what paper has been used, with assurances the fibre used originates from legal and sustainable sources.

What is PEFC?
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) is a system that tries to ensure the sustainability of wood products. Founded in 1999, PEFC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification.

It acts as an umbrella organisation for the assessment of, and mutual recognition of, national forest certification schemes developed in a multi-stakeholder process. Today, it is the world's largest certification scheme with 25 national schemes and over 1,000,000 km² of forest certified.

Why did we adopt this standard?
Consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about the environmental origin of the goods they buy. PEFC allows GI Solutions to use paper reels which have been purchased from a sustainable source.

What does it mean to you?
If you request PEFC paper we will be able to use our chain of custody certification to apply the PEFC mark on to your products. This will demonstrate to your clients that your mailing is made from a sustainable forest.

If you would like more information on how we can help your business, feel free to contact us.

FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®)

GI Solutions holds the Chain of Custody (COC) certification. This demonstrates that our raw materials are sourced responsibly from FSC® certified sources. FSC® certified products support the growth of responsible forest management, which in turn enables our clients to adhere to their own environmental policies. Paper certified by the FSC® has been grown in a managed forestry environment and is from a responsible source. It also means that the paper was manufactured in an environmentally sensitive manner.

FSCWhat is FSC®?
The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is an international non-profit, multi-stakeholder organisation established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. Its main tools for achieving the goal are standard setting, independent certification and labelling of forest products. This offers customers around the world the ability to choose products from socially and environmentally responsible forestry.

Over the past 13 years, over 90 million hectares in more than 70 countries have been certified according to FSC® standards while several thousand products are produced using FSC®-certified wood and carrying the FSC® trademark. FSC® operates through its network of National Initiatives in 45 countries.

FSC®, as a market driven mechanism, empowers consumers to express their demand in the market for responsible forestry by offering an independent, global and credible label for forest products. Consumers can choose forest products with the confidence that they are not contributing to the destruction of the world’s forests. The FSC® mark guarantees that the product comes from responsible sources - environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable. The FSC® mark can be found on a wide range of timber and non-timber products from paper and furniture to medicine and jewellery.

Why did we adopt this standard?
The standard allows GI Solutions to use paper reels which have been purchased from a responsible source. FSC® certification is beneficial to businesses, people and nature. Furthermore, FSC® helps to highlight social issues; it leads to greater transparency and brings companies into dialogue with communities.

What does it mean to you?
If you request FSC® paper, we will be able to use our Chain of Custody (COC) certification to apply the FSC® mark on your products. This will demonstrate to your clients that your mailing is made from a responsibly managed forest.
