Carbon neutrality

The CarbonNeutral Company works with clients to reduce carbon emissions and facilitate carbon off-setting.  This means that for every tonne of carbon that we cannot reduce, we pay for one to be reduced elsewhere in the world.  Therefore, carbon emissions are reduced both locally and on a global scale.  GI Direct's CarbonNeutral® accreditation works in conjunction with ISO 14001 and our FSC accreditation to demonstrate our commitment to making a difference in terms of our global environmental impact.  Both our manufacturing facilities and our offices are completely offset, enabling us to offer our clients a completely CarbonNeutral® mailing should they request it.

Quick facts

  • CarbonNeutral® since 2001

What is CarbonNeutral®?

Carbon neutrality refers to neutral (meaning zero) total carbon release, brought about by balancing the amount of carbon released with the amount sequestered or offset.

It has two common uses:

It can refer to the practice of balancing carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels with renewable energy that creates a similar amount of useful energy, so that the carbon emissions are compensated, or alternatively using only renewable energies that don't produce any carbon dioxide (post-carbon economy).

It is also used to describe the practice of carbon offsetting, by paying others to remove or sequester 100% of the carbon dioxide emitted from the atmosphere – for example by planting trees or by funding 'carbon projects' that should lead to the prevention of future greenhouse gas emissions, or by buying carbon credits to remove (or 'retire') them through carbon trading.

Why did we adopt this standard?

Our travel and our energy consumption are the largest part of our business carbon footprint. Carbon offsetting allows us to take action on global warming today and enables the business to:

  • Reduced costs through energy efficiency
  • Better brand positioning and public relations from achieving CarbonNeutral® status
  • Engaged employees who are increasingly concerned with environmental issues
  • Improved Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Lower Carbon Values for your goods and services.
